This is something we’ve witnessed time and time again. Tv shows worthwhile watching get canned, while brain destroying TV shows survive for multiple seasons. But we’re not going to concentrate on the reasons why this happens. This is certainly something that can span multiple posts!
Instead we’re going to highlight some ofthese short lived tv shows. Shows that are worth your time and deserving more than just a couple of seasons! So without further ado here’s our list!
The tick is a superhero sworn to protect a bus station. That is before the irritated employees of the bus station – in order to get rid of him – convince him that he bought a ticket to the city.
This is a hilarious and absurd tv show based on an equally hilarious and absurd comic book! It follows the adventures of the child like super hero Tick and his sidekicks. An accountant with a flying suit that looks more like a bunny suit, and Captain Liberty who has a love hate relationship with Batmanuel a Latino version of Batman with an uncontrollable sex drive. There’s not much else to say without giving too much away but every single episode is just pure comedic genius! Excellent performances and a really tightly wound script with laughs on every turn. It’s a shame it only lasted 9 episodes! Yep only 9!
A beautifully shot and directed comedy show about Jaye a smart girl who is not living up to her potential. She works as a sales clerk at a Niagara Falls gift shop and that’s where it all begins. She can hear the voices of animal objects talking to her and instructing her to help people. It was one of the few shows at the time where it broke out of the mold of what was expected from a TV show. It not only delivered a great script but also cinematic style of shooting and great editing. It also used visual effects to enhance the story, something that hasn’t been done that successfully before and at that time not as often. Yet another FOX cancellation a network known for getting amazing shows and canceling them before their time!
A brilliant show overall! The story is really simple. Sam and Lindsay are siblings. Sam is a geek and his sister Lindsay who is also geek is desperately trying to find her identity and blend in with the cool kids. All episodes basically revolve around those 2 main characters and their interactions with their friends and family. Sam with his geeky friends and Lindsay split between her geeky friend and her new found cool friends. Of course to add to the whole teen angst the series is set in suburbia, where nothing of importance ever happens. And to top it off everything’s is happening in the 80s! It can’t get any better than that! What makes the show stand out is the natural and often times improvised dialog, along with the excellent direction in photography which is often times muted and set in really ordinary spaces. This enhances the contrast between the environment and what the characters are going through. Trying to break out of the ordinary and stand out. One scene that shows really well the style and pace of the show is the prom dance scene shown in the video below. The scene takes its time to evolve while the song from Styx “sail away” plays for its whole duration in the background. Brilliant! Just brilliant!
Carnivale A quirky and dark TV show with really high production values. It was scheduled for a 6 season run but was cancelled after two seasons. The decision to cancel it though wasn’t completely unsubstunciated. It had an amazing first season that was followed by a weaker second season. The main fault of the second season was how specific plot lines were portrayed and an overall lack of direction. It was trying to do too many things at the same time. As a result it lost a lot of its audience and in the end was cancelled. The show is about a brewing fight between good and evil. A traveling carnival and its characters is one part of the equation. The other is a preacher who learns he has great powers. The show had a huge budget per episode. Especially considering the standards back then. And it showed. From the amazing costumes to the great cast, the cinematography and the great opening titles. Carnivale along with Xfiles, Lost, Wonderfalls and some other shows was definitely paving the way on how TV shows are approached nowadays. As longer length movies shown on a smaller screen size.
As mentioned before Carnivale had great opening titles. Mixing real shots of iconic – good and bad – moments in history with artwork portraying good and evil. It used camera mapping, a technique that wasn’t used that often back then, to dissect the artwork in layers and create a 3d effect while the camera travels inside the artwork. It was done by A52 (http://www.a52.com/work/) a boutique visual effects studio with a lot of beautiful projects under their belt. Definitely a show worth watching. Especially for its first season.
